I've been living in tsing yi since i was born, therefore i didnt usually ride on trams. i had never taken a tram till i was primary four. i forgot where i was going but only the picture kept in my mind throughout years: there were only few passagers on the tram. it was a hot sweltering summer day. i took a sit by the windows. gentle breezes wiped off my torrid feeings and dried my sweat. sceneries outside the windows were so new to me. the ride was rather noisy tho, it was novel and special for the little girl.</p> <p>time flees, now i prefer to have a ride on tram when i'm dejected. it might not be as cozy as 7 years ago. the tram sometimes can be really crowded. but it is slow enough for you to have clear visions of hong kong, the peoples, the buildings and even some trivia which is happening at the same moment in the same city. i'd feel so much better when i've relized that there are plenty of other affairs taking places in such tiny part of the globe. and i'm just a puny part of them.</p> <p style="margin-bottom: 0px;">i can barely imagine hong kong without tram in the future tho it may really happen. 84 years later i probably cant get a ride on tram when i'm down. and these early memories will likely to be vanished with times. but i guess history of hong kong will not put the tram - this aggregate remembrance aside.</p><p>Photo by <a href="https://www.23hq.com/Memory_capsule/">hkfringe club</a></p> https://www.23hq.com/Memory_capsule/photo/465902 Sat, 04 Mar 2006 13:34:17 GMT https://www.23hq.com/Memory_capsule/photo/460024 <p><a href="https://www.23hq.com/Memory_capsule/photo/460024"><img src="https://www.23hq.com/448541/460024_c6a5dec9f49b3b6b5f8f074e9febb54d_standard.jpg" width="460" height="379" class="23-standard"/></a></p><p>The Old Grocery Store<br /> 振隆白米 Chun Lung Rice and grocery store</p> <p>Elaine Cheng ~ working in Human Resources in the hotel industry</p> <p style="margin-bottom: 0px;">This is one of the oldest grocery stores in Hong Kong located at 62 Hollywood Road in Central. This kind of grocery stores were very popular in decades ago which used to sell rice, soya sauce,salt, sugar, cookery oil to its neighbourhood .... sometimes these stores allowed to settle the bill in monthly payment rather than the instant one. This is not an architecture that attempts to over-simplify life by paring down reality. Like the city itself, it is a building constantly in flux, providing a different face for each situation. Soul of the City Phase I in 2004 was Hong Kong’s first international conference bringing experts from all over the world together to examine various aspects of public arts and urban regeneration. Soul of the City Phase II is a follow-up initiative on urban regeneration, engaging the community in the development of space in Hong Kong.</p> <p>Originally a piece of reclaimed land donated to poor children as a place for sunshine to brighten up in the gloom in the 1920s, Southorn Playground was turned into a navy base in the 1930s and a night market in 1950s. In 1980s the Hong Kong government designed the playground into a sports ground for basketball and football games. The playground has remained the same for the past 20 years and as public space is getting more and more scarce in Hong Kong, local districts in Hong Kong are looking for ways to regenerate public areas to serve as many purposes and people as possible.</p> <p>The “new” Southron Playground design was disclosed to the public on 30 July 2005 at the Southron Playground. The design is an artistic, imaginative and functional creation that serves the wishes of Wan Chai residents of having “more green, more play space, and more seating”, as well as creating 7 distinct new spaces for the playground including floating basketball courts and a lowered football pitch. The 30th night always make me very happy and feel the warmth of the family and being in the city like Hong Kong, with lots of people going about a certain tradition. It is exactly like the Christmas eve, where you always have anticipation of a long wonderful evening with friends and family. <br></p> <p>And being in Hong Kong, there is this strange mix of western influence and chinese festivity, because we always choose a western film, and those days almost always the big budget disaster film or Star Wars, so in the cinema I have this great feeling of being transported far far away and yet knowing well that we will be among the crowds soon at the flower market. THis give me the feeling that I am part of something, of being in the city, part taking a great urban experience, but of course I was smaller and didn't know how to articulate that wonderful feeling, I believe it inspires me to make film too, part of the experience of the cinema in the city is not so much the film itself but the re-entering into the urban crowd after the screening, I always feel a sense of communion with strangers walking out of the theatre into the crowd, into the night still bustling with activities in the street, the hawkers with food stand and the night cafe. <br></p> <p style="margin-bottom: 0px;">That no matter what kind of cinematic thrill I have experience, there is a rejoice in entering reality, a feeling of fullness and being taken care of somehow. And going to the flower market is the epitome of that experience. Its aim is to search for traces of memories of the Kaitak Airport in the Kowloon City district. We went up to one of the rooftop of the tenement blocks in Kowloon City and look around. From the photo you could see that a big piece of sky could still be seen in the region as buildings around are mostly low-rise blocks restricted by avaition height in the past. But new buildings have already started coming up and soon from the same place you won't be able to see the Lion Rock at the back. Contributed by Kate Whitehead.</p> <p>Shower Queue - A photo that I altered in PhotoShop and is taken from my flat in<br /> Mid-Levels looking into Victoria Prison of the female prisoners queueing up for a shower. I think its very unusual because where else in the world would you have a prison bang smack in the middle of the city and people be able to look out of their living room windows at the prisoners in their exercise yard? A piece of history, I think. Contributed by David Clarke.</p> <p style="margin-bottom: 0px;">For this memory capsule I have chosen a photo of an event that is itself about memory, the annual June 4th memorial rally in Victoria Park. I took this photo myself at the 2005 rally, one of many I have attended. On this occasion, as on others, I was struck by the number of young children that had been brought by their parents to take part in the rally. Clearly many people are determined not just to remember the tragedy of the violent repression perpetrated by the Chinese state in Beijing on 4th June 1989, but to pass on that memory to children who weren’t even born when it happened. The June 4th rally is about memory, about looking back, but also about the future, about looking forward, since it is about the aspiration for democratic government in China and Hong Kong. When this memory capsule is dug up will democracy have long been a reality in China? Will the story of the 1989 democracy movement be a recognized part of the historical record, or will it have been erased from view? One of the things I like about Hong Kong is its freedom of expression, and the willingness of Hong Kong people to peacefully take to the streets in exercise of their political rights. Until I met him I had not paid much attention to our lovely banyan trees growing on old stone walls, now I look for them everywhere. The roots of the trees remind me of the complex, intertwined nature of life in Hong Kong. Such a busy and complex city means that our lives cross and re-cross, just like the roots of the trees. The walls are the foundations of our city, supporting us in our daily lives.
